Bike Fleet gets kids active!

bikefleet2.jpgSixth graders at Brooklyn Center Secondary Arts and IB World School were the first to use bikefleet.jpgour Three Rivers Bike Fleet, a new outreach program designed to encourage safe riding and active kids. This year, the program will share bikes and safety equipment for use during the program in seven schools, as well as the Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park parks departments and Brooklyn Center police.

For this initial kickoff, than 120 kids were taught bike safety and riding skills as part of their school’s physical education curriculum. There were a lot of smiling faces to go with the beautiful weather! The last day included a fun ride along the Shingle Creek Regional Trail. This summer, sixth and seventh graders will have the opportunity to explore Baker and Elm Creek Park Reserves using the Bike Fleet. A third trip is planned for late July, in which students will bike from their school in Brooklyn Center to Coon Rapids Dam, then raft down the Mississippi where the Bike Fleet will be waiting for them to pedal back to school.
