Upcoming Activity Highlights

Thursday, January 22 – Stories of the Mississippi, Kroening Interpretive Center, 10 a.m. – noon. The Mississippi has some amazing stories to tell through loggers, soldiers at Fort Snelling, residents in the Mississippi Courts, and more. Reservations required.

Saturday, January 24 – Ice Harvesting Day, Richardson Nature Center, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Relive the adventures of Minnesota’s hardy ice harvesters. Cut blocks of ice out of the pond with a vintage ice saw, pull an antique ice plow, weigh blocks of ice, use chipping tools and make ice cubes. Try a kicksled, visit a fish house, and watch live ice rescue demonstrations. Keep warm with campfires or enjoy cocoa and a film of early-1900s ice harvesting inside. Drop in anytime. 

Tuesday, February 3 – Full Moon Snowshoe with S’mores, French Regional Park, 6 – 8 p.m. Explore winter signs and sounds under the light of the full moon. Enjoy a fire and s’mores after. Equipment provided. Reservations required. 

Tuesday, February 3 – Painting the Winter Landscape in Watercolor (8 sessions), Silverwood Park, 6 – 8 p.m. Gain an appreciation for the beauty of a snowy landscape. With instructor Catherine Hearding, discover how to compose a scenic painting, find color in snow, paint snow shadows and light-filled winter landscapes. Registration required by January 23. 

Saturday, February 7 – Snowshoe along the Mississippi, Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park, 10 a.m. – noon. Explore wildlife signs, tracks, and deer beds on snowshoes. Beginners welcome. We will hike if no snow. Equipment and refreshments provided. Reservations required. Twenty percent discount for groups of four or more.
