End of an Era

100915_Newsworthy.jpgCapping off a distinguished career, Three Rivers' recently retired Director of Natural Resources John Barten received the Lifetime Stewardship Award from the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD). Recognized throughout the region, state and nation, John developed and implemented a water quality management plan to protect our surface and ground waters while increasing public awareness about water quality. He also led regional efforts to combat the spread of aquatic invasive species, and was instrumental in passing the 2002 state law restricting use of phosphorus fertilizer on residential lawns. Minnesota was the first state in the nation to pass such legislation, and it served as the model for other states to follow. John celebrated the first weeks of his retirement by riding his bike from Portland OR to Portland ME!
