Growing active kids!

03sdf0416_Newsworthy.jpgThree Rivers partners with CycleHealth and area pediatricians to host the adventure race “Kidarod” at 030416_Newsworthy.jpgFish Lake Regional Park in Maple Grove. Our shared goal is to motivate kids to be active, introduce them to lifelong fitness opportunities and celebrate personal success stories.

This winter’s warm/cold/warm weather proved a challenge, but our intrepid staff made it possible for 350 kids to have a special day trying snowshoeing (many for the first time), learning about sled dogs, and meeting the challenge of pulling themselves up a “gnarly hill” via a fire hose rope, climbing, crawling under, steadying themselves among numerous obstacles, and finishing with an epic slide down an intimidating and exhilarating “luge.”

I wanted to share just one example of what this means to our participants, like Park Brook Elementary (Brooklyn Park), with a 030iuy416_Newsworthy.jpgdiverse student body that speaks 15+ languages and three-fourths of its students eligible for free/reduced lunches. Principal Scott Taylor trains with his students throughout the year, and he led 24 of them across the finish line of the Nighttime Glow Race – all with huge smiles.
