Coon Rapids Dam update

coonrapids01.jpgThe first phase of our Coon Rapids Dam Rehabilitation Project is now complete! Five new spillway gates and the new stilling basin are in operation. Phase 2 is expected to begin in April or May, but river flows will dictate when construction can actually start. Phase 2 construction will include a temporary cofferdam on the Hennepin County side of the river, installation of four new spillway gates, and refurbishment of the existing control gate. Construction is anticipated to be complete later this Fall. Keep reading for more information on the construction and schedule.

The spillway gate system will maintain the pool level at about 830.1 feet, but fluctuations may occur due to calibration of the new gates, high spring flows, and construction operations.  The walkway across the main part of the dam will remain closed until project completion. The walkway between the Anoka County side of the dam and Dunn Island will be closed for two weeks this Spring for replacement of the lights. The West Coon Rapids Dam Visitor Center will remain open during its normal seasonal schedule.
